🎓 Tashkent State Medical University: ushering in a new era of medical education
Uzbekistan has launched one of the most ambitious reforms in its higher education system, reshaping the future of medicine in the country. The result of this transformation is the establishment of Tashkent State Medical University (TSMU) — a flagship institution that now stands at the center of medical education in Central Asia.
Following the historic 2025 merger of three leading medical schools — Tashkent Medical Academy, Tashkent Pediatric Medical Institute, and Tashkent State Dental Institute — TSMU has emerged as a consolidated powerhouse, uniting outstanding faculty, unique clinical facilities, and advanced research resources under one roof. The mission is clear: to achieve global competitiveness and secure a place among the world’s best universities.
🚀 Steps to raise standards
Beginning with the 2025–2026 academic year, TSMU is unveiling a new model of medical education, one that blends innovation, hands-on clinical practice, and international academic collaboration.
Over the past months, the University has taken bold steps to raise standards:
- European experts have been engaged to provide their recommendations for improving the core areas of training, and these recommendations have been incorporated into the enhancement of the academic programs.
- An International University Development Council has been formed, bringing together world-class specialists from the USA, Korea, Singapore, Turkey, the UK, and across Europe to ensure the adoption of global best practices.
- The Secretary General of the Association of Medical Schools in Europe has joined as an academic advisor, guiding the modernization of teaching and learning processes.
- International consultants from Korea and Lithuania have also been engaged to support the achievement of advanced international standards in clinical and organizational processes
🌍 Support for international students
At the same time, in order to improve the learning conditions for international students during this period:
- More than 100 university teachers have completed intensive training in Medical English with native-speaking experts.
- Leading foreign specialists from Italy, Germany, Korea, Turkey, and beyond — including over 10 visiting professors from India — are set to deliver master classes and intensive courses this academic year.
- A comprehensive preparation program for international exams, including USMLE and FMGE, has been developed to give students a competitive edge.
📚 Recent achievements
In just the most recent period:
- The University library has been enriched with 2,000 new English-language medical books, giving students access to the most up-to-date knowledge in global medicine.
- The work of simulation centers has been integrated, strengthening the connection between academic training and real clinical practice.
- For international students, the educational process is delivered by highly qualified faculty, more than 300 of whom hold language certificates, including internationally recognized ones.
Today, Tashkent State Medical University is home to more than 3,000 students from different countries around the world. This large and multinational student community creates a unique atmosphere of academic and cultural exchange.
🏠 Student life and facilities
The student dormitories of Tashkent State Medical University provide comfortable conditions for living and learning. Modern furnished rooms and access to all essential household infrastructure ensure a safe and convenient environment for students. Considerable efforts are made to maintain order and carry out systematic renovation works, ensuring consistently high living standards.
✈️ Visa and registration
To ensure the timely resolution of visa and registration matters, a dedicated Visa Office has been established, based on best international practices, and staffed by experienced specialists, including those with many years of service in the system of internal affairs.
🤝 Partnerships and admissions
Thanks to the conditions created, the University enjoys growing popularity among international students. Applications are received daily from agencies and agents proposing cooperation in the recruitment of international students. However, many of these agents are not always professional. Drawing on international best practices and optimizing cooperation in this area, the University will continue partnerships only with the most experienced, professional, student-oriented companies that possess all the necessary licenses and permits.
TSMU’s reputation continues to grow, attracting thousands of applications from abroad. Yet the University remains committed to quality over quantity. Admissions for international students are strictly conducted through entrance interviews, and experience shows these interviews are rigorous. This year alone, around 60% of applicants did not pass, underscoring the University’s insistence on strong academic preparation, which has in turn given rise to a number of misleading information.
🎯 Academic mission
The University is committed to ensuring high-quality medical education and urges reliance only on reliable sources.
The primary goal of the academic program is to equip students with strong practical skills and interdisciplinary experience. From their very first years of study, students will undertake short clinical rotations, training alongside practicing physicians at leading clinical facilities, directly at the patient’s bedside.
🚀 Looking ahead
The unification and the reform carried out will make it possible to achieve results that were previously unattainable. The University now possesses the consolidated infrastructure of three institutes, modern simulation centers, an updated system of staff training, an expanded English-language library, and strong international partnerships. These changes will ensure the training of a new generation of physicians who meet global standards and will establish Tashkent State Medical University as a key pillar of Uzbekistan’s medical education and research system.
